As the vines slowly wake up, a formidable enemy lies in wait: <b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"163\">spring frost<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">At Domaine P\u00e8re Auguste, we keep a constant eye on weather forecasts and thermometers. But how do we actually fight the cold to save our future grapes? Here are the three main techniques we use in the heart of our vineyard.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"5\">Why is frost so dangerous for the vines?<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">In winter, the vine is dormant and can easily withstand freezing temperatures. However, as soon as the weather warms up, the buds begin to open: this is called <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"160\">budburst<\/b>. These young shoots and first green leaves are filled with water and are extremely fragile.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">If the temperature drops below <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"31\">0\u00b0C<\/b>, the water inside the plant tissues freezes, which can instantly destroy the entire future harvest. To counter this, we deploy a variety of protective measures.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"8\">1. Artificial Fog: Shielding the Vines from the Sun<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">One technique we use involves creating a <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"41\">smoke screen<\/b> or artificial fog.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"10\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Science:<\/b> After a morning frost, the buds are covered in a thin layer of ice. When the first rays of sun hit this ice, it creates a &#8220;magnifying glass effect&#8221; that literally burns the young shoots.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Solution:<\/b> By using smoke machines or burning low-grade hay, we create a thick screen. This protects the vines from direct sunlight while the ice melts slowly and naturally. It is a cost-effective solution that requires perfect timing and high reactivity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"11\">2. Frost Fans: Using Physics to Save the Wine<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">You may have seen these large propellers standing tall in our landscape. These are <b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"83\">frost fans<\/b> (or wind machines).<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"13\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"13,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Science:<\/b> It\u2019s a law of physics: warm air rises, and cold air settles at ground level.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"13,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Solution:<\/b> The tower, with a head that rotates <b data-path-to-node=\"13,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"50\">360\u00b0<\/b>, creates an artificial wind that pulls the warmer air from above (at a <b data-path-to-node=\"13,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"126\">6\u00b0 angle<\/b>) and pushes it back down to the ground. This constant mixing raises the temperature just enough to keep the buds out of the danger zone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"14\">3. Vineyard Candles: Precision Care for Our Young Vines<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\">This is undoubtedly the most spectacular and poetic sight in the vineyard at night, but it represents grueling work for our team.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"16\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Science:<\/b> We place between <b data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"30\">400 and 600 large candles per hectare<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"16,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Solution:<\/b> Positioned as close as possible to the vines, these candles directly increase the ambient temperature of the plot.
